A Milestone in Power Generation

China's installed solar PV capacity reached 1.286 billion kilowatts at the end of July, officially surpassing coal-fired power capacity (1.285 billion kilowatts) for the first time in history. This milestone marks a structural break in the country's energy landscape, officially establishing solar as the largest power source by installed capacity.

The shift signifies that renewable energy has transitioned from a supplementary power source into the primary driver of installed capacity growth.

Structural Transformation and Grid Challenges

While installed capacity leads, actual power output still faces inherent intermittency. Solar energy availability varies with daylight and weather conditions, resulting in lower annual utilization hours compared to steady coal power. Consequently, coal continues to serve as an essential baseload standard and peak-shaving backup to ensure overall grid stability.

This structural evolution places unprecedented demands on grid infrastructure and energy management. To accommodate high-penetration solar power without curtailment, the energy sector must rapidly expand flexible resources. The focus is shifting toward integrated energy storage systems (ESS), smart microgrids, and advanced power distribution technologies.

The Road Ahead for the New Power System

Moving forward, industry growth will depend heavily on energy storage deployment and intelligent grid balancing. Battery storage, pumped hydro, and virtual power plants (VPPs) are becoming vital components to smooth out power fluctuations and manage peak demand effectively.

At the same time, market mechanisms are adapting to support this transition. Green power trading, spot energy markets, and capacity compensation schemes are being refined to incentivize grid flexibility. As solar continues to scale, combining PV with robust storage and smart trading will be key to unlocking a resilient, low-carbon energy future.
