Independent power producer Neoen, headquartered in France, and Swedish solar developer and IPP Alight have announced the commencement of construction on the jointly developed 100-megawatt Hultsfred solar photovoltaic project in Sweden's Småland region.
Bouygues Energies & Services and Solkompaniet will lead the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts for this Nordic project. The project will involve the installation of low-carbon photovoltaic panels around the runway of Hultsfred Airport, connecting to the utility company E.ON. The CEO of E.ON Energidistribution emphasized its significance for the power supply in southern Sweden.
The developers aim to have the project operational by 2025, with 95% of the energy sold to H&M Group through long-term power purchase agreements, supporting the retailer's renewable energy goals. The specific use of the energy remains undisclosed.
In 2022, H&M received a notice from the Norwegian Consumer Authority regarding misleading environmental statements and sustainability in its value chain. The brand was also mentioned in a 2022 fast fashion report by the European Parliament, along with retail giant Zara. In September 2023, Alight announced that another project in the Nordic region, a 100-megawatt ground-mounted solar park in Eurajoki, Finland, will soon begin construction. According to the latest data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, Sweden had recorded 2,606 megawatts of solar photovoltaic installed capacity by the end of 2022.
